How To Make A Leader’s Camp Survival Kit

By: Kyle Goings (Student Ministry Pastor of First MB Church in Wichita)

We are doing something different this year.  Every year we usually take about 20 adult leaders to our summer camps.  A lot of amazing ministry happens during these weeks but it also takes a lot of work and commitment from our adult leaders.  Not only do most of them give up a week off work, they also serve 24/7 while at camp.  It’s a highlight every year for both students and leaders. So this year we wanted to say thank you and show our appreciation to our adult leaders by creating a fun and encouraging Adult Leader’s Camp Survival Kit.

I did some research online and got a few ideas but most of it came from me going to a dollar store and grabbing items I think might be useful, enjoyable, or just fun to symbolize a funny saying.  The purpose is to bring a smile to each leader’s face.  We will give these kits out as the leaders get on the bus for a nice surprise.  Our box costs around $12 per kit, mainly because several items we bought in bulk.

If you want to make your own, the best part is you can include as much or as little as you want!  The key is to personalize it to your group and embrace the corniness of it!  I have also included some items we came up with that we might include next year.  If you know of an item we should add or different saying for one of the items already feel free to leave a comment!

The box I found on Amazon, here, but any bag would work as well.

Included Items:

Granola Bar – An extra bit of nourishment that they will be lacking during the whole week…

Cheez-It – Just when you think that camp wasn’t cheezy enough…

Oreo – For that needed late-night sugar high…

Kleenex – To wipe the tears of those hormonal girls or that one guy…

Band-Aid – For when things get a little rough…

Pen – Because the pen is mightier than the sword and we will not let you use a sword on the students…

Gum – To remind you to stick with it…

Safety Pins – To hold it all together…

Hair Tie – To help you stretch yourself beyond your limits…

Cards – For games to get to know your cabin mates…

Smarties – Because you will need your wits about you…

Hand Sanitizer – To use after prayer circles…

Post-Its – To write some encouragement notes…

Advil – To numb the pain of camp…

Lifesavers – You are a lifesaver and you will need some encourage “mint”…

Sunblock – To protect you from the sun’s hatred…

Ear Plugs – (Self-explanatory)

Rubberband– To remind you to be flexible…

Toothpick – To pick out the good in others…

Laughy Taffy – Because who wouldn’t want a good laugh…

Tootsie roll – To remind you that sometimes you need to roll with it…

Swedish Fish – To remind you to be fishers of men…

Extra Items:

Duct Tape – To help with sticky situations

Bubbles – When you feel ready to pop

Animal cookies – for when your cabin seems like a zoo

Starbursts – to give you a “burst” of energy when you need it…

A string – to tie everything together when everything falls apart

Lollipop – For when life sucks…

Soap – To help wash away your troubles…
